Baby Steps

The Baby Steps Program supports high school students in parenting and completing their high school education while providing a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children. Baby Steps was first opened by the Junior League of Norman in 1993 and supports teen parents as they complete their high school education and build parenting skills. More than 225 pregnant and parenting teens have graduated high school while participating in the Baby Steps program.

  • There is no cost to the parents of the children.

  • Students may enroll in the Baby Steps class as part of their course schedule for elective credit. Curriculum for the course includes child development, discipline, health, safety, parenting skills, coping strategies, and related topics.

  • Seasonal celebrations happen throughout the year.

  • Help with food, clothing, and diapers is available.

  • Students receive help accessing resources such as WIC benefits, medical care, and housing.

  • Tutoring is available on request.

  • Transportation is available for teen parents and their children through the Norman Public Schools. Transportation is between home, school, and the Baby Steps Center.

Baby Steps Class

High School Students who are pregnant or parenting may enroll in the Baby Steps Class during their regular class schedule. Students spend class time receiving support from teachers and other teen parents who are experiencing similar struggles and celebrations. Students also learn about prenatal care, child development, life skills, parenting, and relationships.

Do you need care for your child while you attend school?

Baby Steps Early Head Start is a high-quality child development and education program provided by Crossroads Youth & Family Services which serves children ages birth to 3 years old, along with comprehensive services including health and development screenings, nutrition, educational goal setting, and family engagement opportunities. Students who enroll as expectant mothers also receive prenatal support and education. Diapers and formula are supplied for the children while they are cared for at Baby Steps. Parent Support

Students who are interested in individualized parenting education and support may enroll in services provided by the Center for Children & Families, Inc. Bringing Up Babies program. Bringing Up Babies (BUB) is a program designed to provide personalized discussions regarding pregnancy, relationships, child development, and parenting ideas/resources. Parent educators provide age-appropriate activities to encourage development and bonding between child and parent. Services can be provided in English or Spanish. Would you like to participate?

  • High School Enrollment - High School students who wish to participate in the Baby Steps Class or parent education services should apply through their high school counselor.

  • Early Head Start Enrollment - To enroll a child (infant through 3 years old) in the Baby Steps program, the student must also visit the Baby Steps House located at 941 Nebraska to complete an Early Head Start application. Students will need to bring their child’s current immunization record, certified birth certificate, medical card, and proof of income (if applicable).
